January 18 – Don Smith
Don Smith is a native Tar Heel and has lived in the Old North State for all but four of his years … continuously since 1963. He’s been playing guitar since 1979, mandolin since 1999, and has added half a dozen other instruments to his repertoire since then … the most recent being the ukulele and the Irish bouzouki in 2024. He’s been performing at Sacred Grounds since 2000 and has made at least 40 appearances on our stage in two trios, in one-off collaborations with friends, and as a solo artist. Those of you who have seen Don perform in the past know that he loves songs that tell stories about such diverse subjects as hobos, outlaws, orphans, train wrecks, the old homestead, lost love, and family. Tonight, he’ll be performing two sets of songs that present stories about *REAL* people, places, events, and things. Some are poignant … others are lighthearted and funny. In addition, he’ll be telling a short story about every song, helping to make it “come alive” when you hear it. This will be his first time back at Sacred Grounds in almost 5 years, so please come out for this very special night of storytelling through both the spoken word and music.
